Q: What software tools are you using to process raw image files?

A: There are many raw file processing programs available to photographers, and almost all high-end cameras come with proprietary conversion software. I prefer to use two great Adobe products that have proven to deliver superb digital conversions. Adobe Camera Raw (CS3), and Adobe's newest raw editing software, Lightroom v2. Both authored with the help of Thomas Knoll, the man who co-created Photoshop.

Q: What about hardware?

A: This list is always being upgraded. Right now: 24" Mac for the studio and a 17" Sony Vaio laptop for mobility. Both color calibrated with Monaco Color Management. Wacom Pen Tablet, A tower of external storage drives and a whole lot of memory running both the Sony and Mac systems.

Q: What is your turnaround time for processing images?

A: The average turnaround for one complete job is typically one week from the day I receive your images. *Two day rush service is available, so please contact KMS-Digital for a quote.

Q: How do I send my image files to you?

A: You can burn your files on DVD, send a well packed external storage drive, or FTP. FedEx, UPS, and US Mail are all available.

Q: How long have you been doing digital workflow?

A: Ten years, and looking forward to many more.

Q: Does KMS-Digital only provide services for wedding photographers?

A: Any photographer that shoots high volume digital images and is looking for processing relief is encouraged to use the service. Sports, special event, editorial, wedding...you name it, KMS-Digital will process it.

Q: Do you convert raw files to DNG?

A: It's really up to you if you prefer the RAW conversions to be DNG. It's a good habit to convert RAW files to the Adobe Digital Negative (.DNG) format because it offers numerous advantages.

For photographers, camera manufacturers, and software developers alike, the Adobe DNG format provides a single common language for third party converter applications to deliver consistent quality. Everything you need to know about the DNG can be found here, but to put it simply, the benefits for you are:

Ensures that your raw files can be opened and converted more easily as camera manufacturers update to accommodate future technological changes.
All metadata (file information) is stored within the DNG. No more pesky sidecar files.
It's a stable format, publicly documented, and in some cases, reduces the size of your raw file leaving you more computer storage space...while absolutely no information is lost in the file.
